Imlil is the most famous mountain village in the High Atlas. Sitting at about 1,740 metres at the foot of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa, it is the starting point for walks to Berber valleys, mountain passes and earthen villages stacked above the walnut trees. Unlike the ascent of Toubkal, which takes at least two days, a beautiful one-day hike from Marrakech is well within reach of any reasonably fit walker. Here is how to organise it.

Imlil at a glance

  • Distance from Marrakech: about 65 km, via Tahannaout and Asni.
  • Driving time: around 1 hour 30 minutes, the last part on mountain roads.
  • Altitude: about 1,740 m in the village, much higher on the trails.
  • Trip duration: a full day of about 8 hours.
  • Difficulty: moderate, from 2 to 5 hours of walking depending on the route.

A typical hiking day

Your driver picks you up around 8 am. The road crosses the Haouz plain and then climbs the Asni valley, where a large souk takes place on Saturdays. After Asni, the bends follow one another up to Imlil, where your mountain guide is waiting. The hike starts right from the village, between apple and cherry orchards, irrigation channels and stone houses. At midday, lunch with a local family or on a terrace facing the peaks: tagine, salad, wood-fired bread and mint tea. Back to Imlil in mid-afternoon, then the drive to Marrakech, arriving around 5 pm.

What you will see on the way

The drive is already part of the trip. After Tahannaout, the road enters the Moulay Brahim gorges, a defile of red rock where the valley suddenly narrows. It then reaches Asni, a large farming town surrounded by orchards, known for its Saturday souk where villagers from the surrounding valleys sell fruit, vegetables and livestock. The last kilometres to Imlil zigzag above the river, with, on clear days, the first views of the peaks of the Toubkal massif. Your driver is happy to stop for photos and to tell you about life in these valleys.

Three routes for every level

The village loop (easy, 2 to 3 hours)

A balcony path links Imlil to several nearby hamlets. Little elevation gain, magnificent views over the valley and many chances to meet villagers working in the fields. Ideal for families or a first hike.

Aroumd and the Toubkal valley (moderate, 3 to 4 hours)

This path climbs to Aroumd, the highest village in the valley, built on a rocky spur facing the Toubkal massif. The ascent is steady, on a mule track. On the way back you follow the riverbed and the cultivated terraces.

Over the pass to the next valley (challenging, 4 to 5 hours)

For strong walkers, a route crosses a pass above Imlil into a wilder neighbouring valley. In winter and spring, you look out over snow-capped peaks almost the whole way. Your guide adapts the route to your pace and the day’s conditions.

Why a mountain guide

In the Toubkal area, hikes are done with a licensed mountain guide. Beyond the regulations, it is a real asset: the guide knows the trails, the families to have lunch with and the history of the villages, and can adapt the route if the weather changes. The guide is included in our Imlil and High Atlas day trip.

Which season?

  • Spring (April to June): the most beautiful season, with fruit trees in blossom and snow still on the peaks.
  • Autumn (September and October): golden light, the walnut and apple harvest, ideal walking temperatures.
  • Summer: much cooler than Marrakech, but the afternoon sun is strong: start early.
  • Winter: superb snowy landscapes; some trails may be closed, and the road can be disrupted after heavy snowfall.

A region rebuilding

The Atlas villages around Imlil, Asni and Ouirgane were affected by the September 2023 earthquake. Today reconstruction is progressing and the villagers are welcoming visitors again: having lunch with a family, buying local crafts or hiring guides from the valley directly supports the mountain economy.

Imlil or Ourika?

If you are looking for a day of walking, trails and wide open spaces, Imlil is the right choice. If you prefer a more varied and easier day with riverside cafés, the Ourika Valley will suit you better: we present it in our Ourika Valley day trip guide. Lovers of peace and quiet will also enjoy the Asni and Ouirgane Valley loop, with its lake and pine forests.

Staying in Imlil

For full immersion, or to prepare a Toubkal ascent, several guesthouses and kasbahs welcome travellers in Imlil. We then provide a private Marrakech to Imlil transfer with a driver used to mountain roads; luggage can then be carried by mule to the highest accommodation.

Our checklist

  • Hiking boots or trainers with a good grip.
  • A windproof jacket, a fleece outside summer, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Water, sunscreen and a few snacks.
  • Cash for the guide’s tip and purchases in the villages.
