Barely an hour from Marrakech, the Ourika Valley is the gentlest gateway to the High Atlas. The road leaves the ochre suburbs of the city, crosses olive groves, then winds between ever higher mountains along a river lined with walnut trees and oleanders. It is the ideal day trip for a first encounter with the Moroccan mountains, suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Here is how our driver-guides plan a perfect day in the Ourika Valley.

The Ourika Valley at a glance

  • Distance: about 65 km from Marrakech to the village of Setti Fatma, at the end of the road.
  • Driving time: 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes by private car, depending on traffic leaving Marrakech.
  • Recommended duration: a full day, around 8 hours including pick-up and drop-off at your hotel.
  • Difficulty: easy, except the climb to the waterfalls, which requires good shoes.
  • Altitude: Setti Fatma lies at about 1,500 metres, noticeably cooler than Marrakech.

A typical day

A private tour lets you set the pace, but this is the programme we recommend to most of our travellers.

  1. Departure around 8:30 am from your hotel or the meeting point closest to your riad.
  2. Stop at the Tnine Ourika market if you travel on a Monday: it is the valley’s big weekly souk, very authentic, where villagers sell fruit, vegetables, spices and livestock.
  3. Visit to an argan cooperative run by local women: you will discover the traditional extraction of argan oil, both cosmetic and culinary.
  4. Tea in a Berber house: a family opens its mud-brick home, its bread oven and its roof terrace overlooking the valley.
  5. Arrival in Setti Fatma around 11:30 am and walk up to the waterfalls with a local guide.
  6. Riverside lunch: tagine or grilled meat on a terrace set right above the water.
  7. Relaxed return with photo stops, arriving back in Marrakech in the late afternoon.

The Setti Fatma waterfalls

Above the village, a series of waterfalls, often called the “seven cascades”, tumbles down the mountain. The first one is reached in 20 to 30 minutes on a rocky path that requires some agility: a few sections are climbed using your hands. The others are further and more demanding. The official guides of Setti Fatma know every stone of the path and adapt the route to your level; with young children, the first waterfall and a break in a mountain café are more than enough.

When to visit the Ourika Valley

Spring, from March to May, is the most beautiful season: orchards in bloom, a full river and snow-capped peaks in the background. Autumn, in October and November, brings golden light and very pleasant temperatures. In summer, the valley becomes the refuge of Marrakech residents escaping the heat: lively and festive, but very busy at weekends, so choose a weekday and an early start. Winter is still possible and often superb, sometimes with snow on the ridges, but the river can rise after heavy rain: your driver always checks the state of the road and trails before setting off.

Ourika or Imlil: which one?

The two valleys are close but very different. Ourika is easier to reach and livelier, with riverside cafés and cultural visits all along the road: perfect for a first discovery or for families. Imlil, at the foot of Mount Toubkal, is higher, wilder and designed for hiking. If you enjoy walking for several hours, read our guide to hiking in Imlil and the High Atlas. If you prefer a varied, contemplative day without much effort, Ourika is the right choice.

Why choose a private tour

In the valley, group coaches all stop at the same places at the same times. On a private tour you decide: stay longer at the cooperative, skip the market, add a walk through a village, have lunch later. Your driver knows the restaurants where the food is good and those where you wait an hour. For a family or a group of friends, our Ourika Valley day trip in a private vehicle remains very affordable per person, with pick-up at your hotel.

Staying overnight in the valley?

Several guesthouses and charming kasbahs line the valley. Spending one or two nights there lets you hike early in the morning, when the trails are empty. In that case a simple private Marrakech to Ourika transfer is all you need, with a driver used to mountain roads and plenty of room for your luggage.

Practical tips

  • Bring cash: many small shops and guides do not accept cards.
  • Pack a light jacket, even in May: it is often five to eight degrees cooler than in Marrakech.
  • Agree on the local guide’s fee politely before setting off, or let your driver arrange it.
  • Respect the villagers’ privacy: always ask before photographing someone.

The Ourika Valley is also an excellent complement to a city-focused stay in Marrakech: a day of greenery, water and fresh air. To plan the rest of your programme, see our guide to the best day trips from Marrakech or discover the full page on the Ourika Valley.
