Marrakech is arguably the best base in Morocco for exploring the country: within two hours’ drive you move from palm groves to High Atlas valleys, from the stony Agafay desert to Berber villages clinging to the mountainside. The challenge is choosing the right day trips, at the right time and at the right pace. This guide gathers the experience of our driver-guides, who drive these roads every day, to help you build a balanced holiday without wasted hours on the road or unpleasant surprises.

How to choose a day trip from Marrakech

Before booking, ask yourself four simple questions. They rule out half of the options straight away and save you from the “far too long” day many travellers regret.

  • Return driving time: beyond six hours in the car in a single day, a trip becomes tiring, especially with children or in summer.
  • The season: the Atlas valleys are at their best in spring, the ocean is pleasant all year round, and the desert is best from October to April.
  • Your pace: do you want to hike, take photos, swim, or simply enjoy a view over a mint tea?
  • Group size: for families and friends, a private tour with a driver often costs barely more per person than a shared coach, with complete freedom.

Half-day trips

Perfect on your arrival day, the day before you fly home, or to alternate with a day in the medina.

  • Agafay desert at sunset: about 45 minutes from the city, a landscape of mineral hills facing the Atlas peaks. Camel ride, Berber dinner in a tent and starry skies: our Agafay desert evening is one of the most requested experiences.
  • Quad biking in the Agafay hills: two hours of guided riding, suitable for beginners, followed by tea with a local family (quad biking in the Agafay desert).
  • Hot air balloon flight: take-off at dawn, an hour above villages and palm groves, then a Berber breakfast (hot air balloon ride in Marrakech).
  • Guided tour of the medina: Koutoubia, Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa, the souks and Jemaa el-Fna square with an official guide (Marrakech guided city tour).

The High Atlas in a day: Ourika, Imlil, Asni and Ouirgane

This is the great nature escape within reach of Marrakech. The Ourika Valley is the easiest to reach: a winding road along the river, argan cooperatives, Berber houses and a walk up to the Setti Fatma waterfalls. For a more mountainous experience, Imlil, at the foot of Mount Toubkal, offers real hiking trails between walnut trees, orchards and earthen villages. Finally, the Asni – Ouirgane loop is the most peaceful option: a lake, pine forests and lunch facing the peaks.

Essaouira and the Atlantic Ocean

About 2 hours 45 minutes away, Essaouira has a completely different atmosphere: ramparts facing the ocean, a harbour full of blue boats, a UNESCO-listed medina, a fresh breeze and grilled fish. A return trip in one day is perfectly feasible, with a stop at an argan cooperative on the way. We detail the ideal programme in our guide what to see in Essaouira in one day. If you would rather spend a few nights there, a private Marrakech to Essaouira transfer is more comfortable than a return trip.

The Ouzoud waterfalls

Morocco’s highest waterfalls, around 110 metres, lie about 2 hours 30 minutes north-east of Marrakech. A well-marked trail, Barbary macaques, a boat ride at the foot of the falls and lunch facing the water: a refreshing day, perfect from March to June. All our tips are in the Ouzoud waterfalls guide.

The road of the kasbahs: Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate

A long but spectacular day: crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass at more than 2,200 metres, then visiting the UNESCO-listed ksar of Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, the “gateway to the desert”. Allow about four hours’ drive each way. We explain how to organise it well in Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate in one day.

The desert: Agafay or Merzouga?

This is the question we are asked most often. Agafay is a stony desert you can enjoy in one evening; Merzouga offers the great sand dunes of Erg Chebbi but needs at least three days. Our comparison Agafay or Merzouga will help you decide, and the 3-day Merzouga tour itinerary details every stage.

Private or group tour?

Group tours leave at a fixed time, stop at the same shops and move at the pace of the slowest participant. On a private tour you choose your departure time, your photo stops and how long you spend at each place; the driver picks you up at your hotel or as close as possible to your riad. It also means comfort: an air-conditioned vehicle, water on board and child seats on request. All our trips are private, with the price confirmed in advance.

Our tips for successful day trips

  • Alternate a long day on the road with a quiet day in Marrakech.
  • Bring a light sweater even in summer: it is cooler in the mountains and in the desert at night.
  • Carry some cash in dirhams for lunch, tips and handicrafts.
  • Keep the longest day (Ait Ben Haddou, Essaouira) for the middle of your stay, when you are well rested.
