“Can you see the desert from Marrakech?” It is the question our drivers hear most often. The answer is yes, but not the same desert depending on how much time you have. Just 45 minutes from the city, the Agafay desert offers a spectacular stony landscape, perfect for an evening. More than 500 kilometres away, Merzouga and Erg Chebbi unfold the great sand dunes of the Sahara, but they require at least three days. This comparison will help you choose with full knowledge of the facts.

Agafay: the stony desert on Marrakech’s doorstep

Agafay is not a sand desert but a hamada, a plateau of bare ochre and beige hills without vegetation, stretching south-west of Marrakech near Lalla Takerkoust lake. On clear days, the snow-capped High Atlas range rises in the background: the contrast is striking, especially at sunset.

  • Distance: about 40 km, or 45 minutes to an hour’s drive.
  • Formats: an evening with dinner, a half day of activities or a night in a camp.
  • Activities: camel ride, quad or buggy, Berber dinner in a tent, music, and a pool at some camps in the afternoon.
  • For whom: short stays, families with young children, couples, and travellers who do not want to spend hours in a car.

Our most popular option is the Agafay sunset camel ride and Berber dinner: departure mid-afternoon, sunset on camelback, candlelit dinner and return to your hotel in the evening. Thrill-seekers can add two hours of quad biking in the Agafay desert.

Merzouga: the real Sahara dunes

In the south-east of the country, near the Algerian border, Erg Chebbi forms a sea of orange dunes reaching up to 150 metres high in places. It is the image of the Sahara many travellers have in mind: camel caravans on the crests, a night under a sky full of stars, a silent sunrise over the sand.

  • Distance: about 550 km from Marrakech, or 9 to 10 hours’ drive including stops.
  • Format: a tour of at least 3 days and 2 nights, since a return trip in one day is impossible.
  • Stops on the way: the Tizi n’Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and the Todra Gorges.
  • For whom: stays of at least five or six days, and travellers who want a real night in the dunes.

The day-by-day details of this journey are in our 3-day Merzouga tour itinerary.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Thinking Agafay looks like the Sahara: photos of luxury camps can be misleading. You will see a beautiful desert, but a stony one, without sand dunes.
  • Trying to do Merzouga in two days: technically possible, but you would spend almost all your time on the road. Three days is the reasonable minimum.
  • Going in midsummer unprepared: in Merzouga, temperatures often exceed 45 °C in July and August. If you travel then, choose an evening in Agafay instead.
  • Underestimating cold winter nights: from December to February, nights in the desert can drop close to 0 °C. Camps provide blankets, but bring a fleece.

What about Zagora?

Between the two, Zagora is sometimes offered as a two-day tour. Its dunes are much smaller than those of Erg Chebbi and the drive is still long, around 7 hours. If your dream is to see the great dunes, Merzouga remains the best choice; if you simply want a taste of the desert, Agafay is much easier.

How we organise your desert experience

For Agafay, your driver picks you up at your hotel or near your riad, drops you at the camp and brings you back after dinner: there is nothing to organise. For Merzouga, our 3-day desert tour includes a private vehicle with driver, nights in a hotel and a camp, and the cultural stops along the way. If you would rather plan your desert stay yourself and simply be driven there safely, we also offer a private Marrakech to Merzouga transfer by minivan or 4x4.

Our verdict

  • A 3- to 5-day stay: Agafay without hesitation, for an evening or with a night in a camp.
  • A week or more: Merzouga, for the unique emotion of the great dunes, and why not Agafay too for a relaxing evening near Marrakech.
  • Travelling with very young children: Agafay, to avoid long days on the road.
