In Morocco, the same trip can be a great day or a long series of imposed stops. The difference often comes down to one question: are you travelling in a group, in a fifteen-seat minibus, or privately, with a vehicle and driver just for you? For families, couples, discerning travellers or simply those who want to make the most of their time, a private tour changes everything. Here is why, how it works and what to check before booking.
What really changes with a private tour
You choose the time
In a group, departure is set for everyone, often very early, and so is the return. On a private tour you leave whenever you want: at dawn for the light and the cool air, or later to enjoy your riad’s breakfast. The driver waits outside your hotel or at the meeting point closest to your riad.
You decide the stops
A viewpoint you like, a village market, a cooperative, a coffee break: just ask. Conversely, you can skip the shops where some group tours stop systematically. The programme is a guideline, not a constraint.
You move at your own pace
Staying an extra hour at the waterfalls, cutting a visit short because the children are tired, having lunch later: on a private tour nobody waits for anybody. This is especially valuable for families with young children, seniors and photographers.
Comfort is guaranteed
A recent, air-conditioned vehicle, water on board, child seats on request, room for bags and pushchairs: you travel in good conditions, without strangers next to you or cramped seats.
Who are private tours ideal for?
- Families: flexible times, child seats, toilet and snack breaks whenever needed.
- Couples and honeymooners: an intimate day, sunsets without crowds, carefully chosen dinners.
- Groups of friends: from three or four people, the price per person often becomes comparable to a shared tour.
- Seniors: less imposed walking, more breaks, a comfortable vehicle.
- Travellers short on time: an optimised programme to see the essentials in minimum time.
Pricing: a per-vehicle logic
A private tour is paid per vehicle rather than per person for the transport part. In practice, a couple will pay a little more than for a group tour, but a family of four or five will often pay a very similar price for incomparable comfort. Always check what is included: fuel, tolls, parking, water, local guide, entrance fees, lunch. With us, the price is confirmed in advance with no online payment: you pay on site, and cancellation is free up to 24 hours before departure.
Driver or guide: who does what?
Your driver takes you there, knows the roads, the timings and the good addresses, and speaks French or English. He is happy to share what he knows about his region. However, to visit a medina or a monument in detail, Moroccan law reserves the role of guide for licensed official guides. That is why we add a local or official guide when the trip requires it: a tour of the Marrakech medina, a hike in the High Atlas or a visit to a site such as the Ouzoud waterfalls.
What to check before booking
- The tourist transport licence: only licensed operators may carry tourists for payment, with suitable insurance.
- The vehicle: model, number of seats, air conditioning, luggage space.
- The price and what it includes: ask for written confirmation by email or WhatsApp.
- Cancellation terms: they should be clear and reasonable.
- Responsiveness: an agency that replies quickly before you book will reply quickly during your stay.
Ideas for tailor-made private tours
One of the great advantages of a private tour is being able to combine places that group tours do not offer together. A few examples:
- Lalla Takerkoust lake and the Agafay desert: a swim or lunch facing the lake, then sunset in the desert (see the trip).
- Asni and the Ouirgane Valley: a peaceful mountain day, away from the Ourika crowds (see the trip).
- The medina in the morning, Agafay in the evening: a full day without changing vehicle.
- Essaouira with a night there, then back by a different road.
