After the bustle of Marrakech, Essaouira feels like a deep breath. Here, white alleys with blue shutters smell of sea spray, gulls circle above the harbour and the Atlantic breeze cools even August days. The former Mogador is perfectly suited to a day trip from Marrakech, as long as you organise your time well. Here is the programme our drivers recommend, with the highlights, the right timings and the pitfalls to avoid.
Essaouira from Marrakech: key facts
- Distance: about 190 km to the west.
- Driving time: 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours each way by private car, with a stop on the way.
- Total duration: around 11 hours from pick-up to drop-off at your hotel.
- Climate: 5 to 10 degrees cooler than Marrakech in summer, with wind almost all year round.
The ideal day
- 8 am: departure from Marrakech. The road crosses the plains around Chichaoua, then argan forests, a tree found only in south-western Morocco.
- Around 10 am: stop at an argan cooperative. Women crack the nuts by hand to produce the oil; it is a chance to understand this know-how and buy directly from the producers.
- Around 11 am: arrival in Essaouira and a walk through the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
- 1 pm: fish lunch at the harbour. Choose the catch of the day at the stalls and have it grilled on the spot.
- Free afternoon: ramparts, marquetry workshops, the beach or a café overlooking the ocean.
- Around 4 pm: departure for a return to Marrakech around 7 pm.
Essaouira’s must-sees
The Skala de la Ville
These 18th-century ramparts, lined with bronze cannons facing the ocean, offer the finest view of the rocks and waves. TV series fans will recognise some famous filming locations.
The fishing harbour and its blue boats
This is the living heart of the town: trawlers, boats painted blue, nets drying in the sun and swirling gulls. Climb the Skala du Port for an overview, especially late in the morning when the fishermen come back.
The medina and its craftsmen
Less of a maze than Marrakech’s, Essaouira’s medina is easy to explore without stress. Do not miss the thuya wood marquetry workshops, the town’s speciality, the art galleries and Moulay Hassan square, perfect for a mint tea.
The beach and the wind
The long beach stretches south towards Diabat. The wind is often strong: great for watching kitesurfers, less so for sunbathing. Board-sport lovers will prefer Sidi Kaouki, about thirty minutes away.
When to go
Essaouira can be visited all year round. Spring and autumn offer the best light. In summer it is the refuge of Marrakech residents escaping the heat: lively but busier. In June, the famous Gnaoua festival attracts thousands of visitors: a great atmosphere, but the town fills up, so book well in advance. Whatever the season, bring a windproof jacket.
Essaouira with children
It is one of the easiest towns to visit as a family. Distances are short, the medina is pedestrian and uncrowded, and the long beach offers space to run, build sandcastles or take a short horse or camel ride along the water. Children also love the harbour: the boats coming in, the nets, the gulls and the fish stalls. Just bring warm clothes for the wind, and stop for a snack on a terrace in Moulay Hassan square. As the return drive from Marrakech is fairly long, a private vehicle with child seats on request makes the day much more comfortable.
A day trip or a few nights?
The day trip suits a holiday based in Marrakech perfectly. But Essaouira truly reveals itself in the evening, when the coaches have left and the medina returns to calm. If you have time, spend one or two nights there: our private Marrakech to Essaouira transfer takes you straight there with your luggage. We compare every travel option (bus, taxi, private driver) in our guide Marrakech to Essaouira: how to get there.
Continuing south afterwards? The Essaouira to Agadir transfer along the coastal road is one of the most beautiful drives in the country.
Why private rather than a group tour?
Group trips to Essaouira often travel by large coach, stop at the same cooperatives and leave only three or four hours in town. On a private tour you choose your departure time, how long each stop lasts and when to come back. You can also add Sidi Kaouki or Diabat, or stay for sunset on the ramparts. Our Essaouira day trip from Marrakech is in an air-conditioned vehicle, with a driver who knows the best places for lunch.
Practical tips
- Vehicles stay outside the walls: the medina is pedestrian, and your driver drops you as close as possible.
- Keep small change for the harbour grills and tips.
- Wear sunscreen despite the cool air: the wind hides the strength of the sun.
- Try the sea urchins and grilled sardines, local specialities.
