Morocco is a fantastic destination for families: a short flight from Europe, sunshine almost all year round, camels, waterfalls, beaches and a warm welcome for children. But travelling with little ones changes everything about getting around: car seats, pushchairs, lots of suitcases, frequent breaks, heat and tiredness. Here is our advice as transport specialists, drawn from thousands of journeys with families, to keep the road a pleasant part of the trip.
Why a private transfer makes family life easier
After a flight with children, the last thing you want is to look for a taxi, negotiate a price and find that the boot is too small for the pushchair. With a private transfer, your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign, the vehicle suits your family and the child seats are already fitted. All you have to do is fasten the seat belts.
Child seats: what you need to know
We provide child seats on request, which must be specified when booking. So that we can plan the right equipment, give the age and approximate weight of each child:
- Baby seat for infants;
- Child seat for toddlers;
- Booster seat for older children.
If you prefer to use your own car seat, that is absolutely fine: it travels in the hold during the flight and our driver helps you fit it. In every case, each passenger, children included, has their own seat with a seat belt.
Choosing the right vehicle
Families rarely travel light. Before choosing, count the passengers but also the suitcases, the pushchair, the travel cot and any sports bags.
- A couple with one child and little luggage: a premium SUV is enough.
- A family of four or five with a pushchair: the Mercedes Vito is the most comfortable choice, with real luggage space.
- Large families or several families together: the Mercedes Sprinter seats up to sixteen.
Our guide to private tourist transport in Morocco details the capacity of each vehicle.
Planning long journeys with children
Distances in Morocco can be long: about 3 hours between Marrakech and Essaouira or Agadir, much more to the desert. A few simple rules make these journeys pleasant:
- A break every 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours: service stations, cafés or viewpoints; your driver knows the good stops with clean toilets.
- Leave early in summer to drive in the cool, and make the most of the little ones’ nap during the journey.
- Keep water, snacks and small games within reach rather than in the boot.
- Mention motion sickness: on mountain roads, the driver adapts his driving and the breaks.
- Avoid days that are too long: with young children, choose a 4-day desert tour rather than 3.
To estimate your driving times, see our table of driving distances and travel times in southern Morocco.
The medina with a pushchair
This often surprises parents: the alleys of the Marrakech and Essaouira medinas are paved, narrow, sometimes sloping and very busy. A pushchair can get through, but with difficulty. Our advice: a baby carrier for sightseeing, and the pushchair for gardens, modern districts and seaside walks. When you arrive at a riad, the driver drops you at the closest point and a porter takes the luggage; we explain how this works in our Marrakech airport transfer guide.
Heat and sun
In summer, Marrakech often exceeds 40 °C in the afternoon. Our vehicles are air-conditioned and water is available on board, but also bring hats, sunscreen and light, covering clothes. Schedule visits in the morning and late afternoon, and keep the hottest hours for the pool.
Day trips children love
- The Agafay desert at sunset: camels, wide open spaces and dinner in a tent, only 45 minutes from Marrakech.
- The Ouzoud waterfalls: monkeys, a boat ride and spectacular falls.
- Essaouira: the beach, the harbour and its boats, a car-free medina.
- Paradise Valley, near Agadir, for swimming in natural pools.
Our ideas are detailed in the guide to the best day trips from Marrakech and in the one about day trips around Agadir and Taghazout.
