You land at Marrakech Menara airport, the heat hits you as you step off the plane, and one question arises immediately: how do you get to your riad or hotel without stress? Taxi, bus or private transfer, access to medina riads, night arrivals, formalities: here is everything you need to know for a smooth arrival in Marrakech, with advice from drivers who make this journey several times a day.
Marrakech Menara airport at a glance
- Code: RAK.
- Location: about 6 km south-west of the medina.
- Driving time: 15 to 25 minutes to the medina, Hivernage or Gueliz; 30 to 40 minutes to the Palmeraie; about 45 minutes to the Agafay camps or the Ourika road.
- Opening: flights at all hours, with many late arrivals from Europe.
On arrival: formalities and first steps
Allow time for passport control: depending on the crowds, it can take from fifteen minutes to more than an hour when several planes land together. Fill in your arrival card if requested, and keep your accommodation’s address handy.
Once you have collected your luggage, two practical things can be done on site:
- Change a little money at the exchange office or withdraw dirhams from an ATM: the dirham cannot be bought outside Morocco.
- Buy a local SIM card from the operators in the arrivals hall, very handy for WhatsApp and GPS.
Your options to reach your accommodation
Taxi
Taxis wait outside the terminal. It is the most visible option, but you need to agree the price before getting in, especially at night, and the cars can be small for families with luggage. The driver will not take you all the way to your riad inside the medina.
Bus
A bus line links the airport to the city centre and Jemaa el-Fna square. Cheap, it suits light travellers who already know the city, but it does not drop you at your door and does not run at all hours.
Private transfer
Your driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, helps with your luggage and takes you straight to your destination at the price agreed in advance. He tracks your flight in real time: if it is delayed, waiting is free. It is the most relaxed option, especially for a first visit, a night arrival or a family trip. Our Marrakech Menara airport transfer is by SUV, Mercedes Vito or Sprinter depending on the number of passengers.
The special case of medina riads
This is what travellers often discover on arrival: the alleys of the medina are too narrow for cars. No vehicle can drop you outside the door of most riads. Here is how it works with a well-organised transfer:
- We ask for your riad’s exact address in advance and contact it if necessary.
- Your driver drops you at the closest accessible point, often a medina gate or a small square.
- A member of the riad staff or a porter with a handcart is waiting and takes your luggage to the door.
Arriving in Marrakech at night
Many European flights land late in the evening. At night, taxis are scarcer and more expensive, and the medina can be confusing. A transfer booked in advance is then particularly reassuring: your driver is there whatever the time, with no extra charge for a delayed flight, and drops you as close as possible to your accommodation, where someone is waiting for you.
The return trip to the airport
For your departure, plan to arrive at the airport 2 to 3 hours before an international flight: security and passport checks can be slow in high season. Your driver picks you up at the hotel or at your riad’s meeting point; the riad porter can bring your luggage down to the vehicle.
Direct transfer to another city
Not staying in Marrakech? Your driver can take you straight from the airport to Essaouira, Agadir, Taghazout or the Atlas valleys without going through the city. See our guides Marrakech to Essaouira and Marrakech to Agadir or Taghazout to compare the options.
Our tips for a stress-free arrival
- Give your flight number when booking: it is what allows the driver to track your arrival.
- State the exact number of suitcases, pushchairs, car seats or sports equipment.
- Activate WhatsApp or keep the agency’s number: if anything unexpected happens, a message is enough.
- Do not follow people offering their services at the exit: your driver holds a sign with your name.
