On a map, Morocco looks compact. On the road, however, distances are measured in hours rather than kilometres: a fast motorway on one side, a pass above 2,000 metres on the other, villages to cross and frequent speed checks. Underestimating travel times is the most common mistake travellers make. Here are our reference tables, based on our drivers’ actual journeys by private car, to help you build a realistic itinerary in southern Morocco.

Why driving times vary so much
Motorway or mountain road
The Marrakech – Agadir and Marrakech – Casablanca routes use the motorway: driving is fast and comfortable. By contrast, the Tizi n’Tichka road to Ouarzazate and the Atlas valley roads are winding: progress is much slower, which is all the better for enjoying the scenery.
Crossing towns and villages
Leaving Marrakech at rush hour, crossing Agadir in the late afternoon or passing through villages on souk days can add a quarter of an hour to half an hour. Your driver knows which times to avoid.
Speed limits and checks
Speed limits are strictly enforced in Morocco, especially at the entrance to towns. A professional driver respects them scrupulously: it is above all a matter of safety.
The weather
In winter, snow can slow down or temporarily close some Atlas passes; after heavy rain, some valley roads are closed as a precaution. We always check road conditions before long journeys.
Three realistic itineraries
One week: Marrakech and the ocean
- Days 1 to 4: Marrakech, with an evening in Agafay and a day in Ourika or Imlil.
- Day 5: Marrakech to Essaouira transfer, about 3 hours.
- Days 6 and 7: Essaouira, then back to Marrakech or a flight from Essaouira airport.
Ten days: Marrakech, Essaouira and Taghazout
- Days 1 to 4: Marrakech and its surroundings.
- Day 5: transfer to Essaouira.
- Day 7: Essaouira to Taghazout transfer along the coastal road, about 3 hours.
- Days 8 to 10: Taghazout, then a flight from Agadir, less than an hour away.
Two weeks: the Atlas, the desert and the coast
- Days 1 to 4: Marrakech and the Atlas.
- Days 5 to 7: 3-day Merzouga desert tour.
- Days 8 to 10: Essaouira.
- Days 11 to 14: Agadir or Taghazout, then a flight from Agadir.
Mistakes to avoid
- Doing two long journeys on consecutive days without a rest day in between.
- Rushing a return trip to Merzouga: nine to ten hours’ drive each way requires at least three days.
- Cutting it too fine before a flight: from Taghazout or Essaouira to Marrakech airport, allow for the drive, a break and 2 to 3 hours of formalities.
- Forgetting the children: with little ones, add a break every two hours. Our tips are in the guide family travel in Morocco.
Organising your journeys
All these journeys can be made by private transfer, with a fixed price per vehicle and a driver who knows the road. To understand the different transport options and choose the best one, see our complete guide to private tourist transport in Morocco.
