Marrakech to Essaouira is one of the most common journeys for travellers in Morocco: you leave the red city and its heat for the fresh Atlantic air and the white medina of the former Mogador. About 190 kilometres separate the two towns. Coach, grand taxi, hire car or private transfer: each option has its strengths and limitations. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose the one that best suits your trip.
The journey in figures
- Distance: about 190 km.
- By car: 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours, with a short break.
- By coach: 3 to 3 hours 30 minutes depending on stops.
- Scenery: farmland, hills, then argan forests as you approach the coast.
Option 1: the coach
Two major companies link the two towns several times a day, from their respective coach stations in Marrakech. The coaches are comfortable and air-conditioned, and tickets are cheap.
- Advantages: price, reliability and the possibility of booking ahead.
- Limitations: you have to get to the departure station, often by taxi from your riad, stick to fixed timetables and check your luggage into the hold. On arrival, the station is outside the medina: you still need to walk or find a porter.
- For whom: solo travellers or couples with little luggage and a tight budget.
Option 2: the grand taxi
Shared grand taxis leave when they are full, with six passengers. You can also “book” all the seats to travel alone.
- Advantages: frequent departures, faster than the coach.
- Limitations: often older vehicles without effective air conditioning, limited comfort, little room for luggage, and a price to negotiate if you hire the whole taxi.
- For whom: travellers used to Morocco and comfortable negotiating.
Option 3: car hire
- Advantages: total freedom of route and timing.
- Limitations: driving out of Marrakech takes confidence, the national road is busy with lorries, and you then have to park outside Essaouira’s ramparts, since the medina is pedestrian. The car often stays parked for your whole stay.
- For whom: experienced drivers planning a road trip beyond Essaouira.
Option 4: private transfer with driver
Your driver picks you up at your hotel or the point closest to your riad, loads your luggage and drops you at the gates of Essaouira’s medina, as close as possible to your accommodation.
- Advantages: door to door, fixed price per vehicle, air-conditioned vehicle, stops whenever you like, no timetable constraints.
- Limitations: more expensive than the coach for one person.
- For whom: families, couples, groups, travellers with luggage, or anyone who wants the drive to be a pleasant part of the trip.
The comparison in one table
| Criterion | Coach | Grand taxi | Car hire | Private transfer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Door-to-door time | 4 to 5 h | 3 h 30 to 4 h | 3 h + parking | About 3 h |
| Comfort | Good | Limited | Depends on the car | Very good |
| Luggage | In the hold, limited | Very limited | Depends on the car | Generous |
| Hotel pick-up | No | No | — | Yes |
| Stops on request | No | No | Yes | Yes |
Possible stops on the way
With a private transfer, the drive becomes a mini excursion. Our drivers often suggest:
- an argan cooperative run by women, to understand how the oil is made;
- a photo stop among the argan trees, where you can sometimes see goats climbing;
- a viewpoint over the coast and the town as you approach Essaouira.
What time should you leave?
We recommend leaving Marrakech mid-morning, after breakfast at your riad. You then reach Essaouira at lunchtime, with the whole afternoon to settle in and discover the ramparts at sunset. Avoid arriving after dark if you can: finding your riad in the medina is easier in daylight, even with a porter. In summer, an early start also helps you escape the Marrakech heat. Finally, on the eve of public holidays and during Moroccan school holiday weekends the road is busier: your driver adjusts the timing if needed.
Arriving in the Essaouira medina
As in Marrakech, Essaouira’s alleys are closed to cars. Your driver drops you at one of the medina gates; porters with handcarts wait there to take your luggage to your riad for a small tip. Tell your accommodation your arrival time: many send someone to meet you.
Straight from Marrakech airport
If you land in Marrakech and want to go straight to Essaouira, there is no need to go through the city: your driver meets you at the airport and heads directly for the coast. It is the ideal solution for late arrivals, when coaches are no longer running.
A day trip or a real stay?
If you only have one day, a return trip is possible: we detail the ideal programme in Essaouira in one day. But to enjoy the evening atmosphere and the town’s peaceful rhythm, nothing beats two or three nights there.
