You are in Agadir or Taghazout for the beach, and Marrakech is calling. We get this question every week: “Can you visit Marrakech in a day from Agadir?” Yes, thanks to the motorway, as long as you accept a long, well-organised day. Here is the programme that works, realistic timings, the pitfalls of big group tours and the cases where one night in the city changes everything.

How long is the drive?

Agadir and Marrakech are linked by the A7 motorway, about 250 kilometres apart. By car, allow three hours door to door, a little more from Taghazout or if you are staying far from central Marrakech. The road crosses the Souss plain and then the hills of the western Atlas, with a coffee break at a motorway service area halfway.

Over one day, that means six hours of driving there and back, for six to seven hours in the city. It is enough to see the essentials of the medina, not to see everything. Our guide Marrakech to Agadir: every transport option also compares the coach and the train for those travelling alone.

A day that works

TimeStop
7.00 amLeave your hotel in Agadir or Taghazout
10.00 amArrive in Marrakech, the Koutoubia and its gardens
10.30 amBahia Palace, then the Mellah
12.00 pmSaadian Tombs or El Badi Palace
1.00 pmLunch on a terrace in the medina
2.30 pmThe souks and Ben Youssef Madrasa
4.30 pmJemaa el-Fna square, free time
5.30 pmLeave for Agadir
8.30 pmBack at your hotel

In the morning you visit the palaces and monuments before the heat and the crowds. The afternoon is for the souks, where a guide saves you from going round in circles and leaves you time to shop without pressure. You finish at Jemaa el-Fna, which starts to come alive in the late afternoon.

By group coach or private car?

Many hotels in Agadir sell a coach trip to Marrakech. The price is low, but it is worth knowing what it involves:

  • A coach of 40 to 50 people, with pick-ups at several hotels: an hour is often lost in the morning.
  • A fixed programme, with stops at partner shops, argan cooperatives or herbalists, which eat into sightseeing time.
  • Little free time, and a departure at a fixed hour, whether you are ready or not.

In a private car you leave when it suits you, choose your visits and head back when you decide. For a family or a small group, the price difference per person is often smaller than people expect, and the day is far less tiring.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Going in high summer without realising. In July and August it is commonly 38 to 42 degrees in Marrakech, against 26 or 27 in Agadir. If you go in summer, keep the outdoor visits for the morning.
  • Trying to do everything. The palaces, the souks, Majorelle, Menara and a hammam in one day is impossible. Choose.
  • Forgetting about Friday. The monuments are open, but many shops in the souks close for the main midday prayer.
  • Underestimating how tired children get. Six hours on the road in one day is a lot for little ones: an overnight stay is better.

What if you stayed a night?

It is often our first piece of advice. With a night in a riad you see Jemaa el-Fna in the evening, when the square is at its liveliest, you visit the next morning without rushing, and you only drive three hours a day. Some clients use the time to add a sunset in the Agafay desert or a hot air balloon flight at dawn. To choose your area, our guide on where to stay in Marrakech compares the medina, Gueliz and Hivernage.

The simplest option: an outward transfer with our driver, a night in the riad of your choice, the guided tour the next day, then the return transfer to Agadir or Taghazout.

From a cruise ship?

Marrakech is often offered as an excursion during port calls in Agadir. With six hours of driving there and back, it only suits very long calls, and the slightest traffic jam risks missing the ship. Our article on Agadir cruise port calls suggests safer alternatives around the city.

What to bring

  • Comfortable shoes: you easily walk 8 to 10 kilometres in the medina.
  • A hat, water and sunscreen.
  • Dirhams in small notes for tips, entrance fees and shopping.
  • Clothes covering shoulders and knees, more comfortable for walking around the medina.
