A hot air balloon flight in Marrakech lasts about an hour in the air, but the whole morning takes nearly four hours: pick-up at your hotel before dawn, inflating the balloon in the countryside, a sunrise flight over villages and olive groves, landing in a field, then breakfast in a Berber tent. You are back in town around 10 am. If you are unsure, here is what we have learned from hundreds of 5 am starts with our clients.
The morning as it really happens
It is an early start. Depending on the season, the driver collects you between 5 and 6:30 am. In June the sun rises around 6:15; in December closer to 7:30, which makes winter a little kinder to late risers.
The drive to the launch site takes 30 to 45 minutes. Balloons take off outside the city, in the countryside north of the Palmeraie or towards the Atlas foothills, depending on the operator and the day’s wind.
Inflation is a show in itself: burners roar in the half-light and the envelopes rise one by one. You have tea or coffee while you wait.
The flight usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour. You rise gently, without jolts: it feels far calmer than people expect. On a clear day you see the snow-capped Atlas on one side, the palm grove and the city on the other, and below you villages, flocks of sheep and children waving.
Landing is in a field chosen by the pilot. There may be a small bump; the ground crew follows the balloon by 4x4 and picks everyone up.
Breakfast follows, often in a Berber tent: msemen pancakes, bread, honey, olive oil, eggs and tea. Then back to your hotel.
Is it worth the money?
It is the most expensive activity around Marrakech, no point pretending otherwise. In our view it is worth it if:
- it is a special occasion (birthday, honeymoon, proposal);
- you have never flown in a balloon;
- you travel between October and April, when the air is clearest and there is snow on the Atlas.
It is less worth it if you hate early mornings, or if your stay is very short and you will lose another day recovering.
Safety, weather and cancellations
Flights are run by licensed pilots, and the decision to fly is taken every morning according to the wind. That is a good thing: a serious operator cancels without hesitation when conditions are not right. In practice:
- weather cancellations happen mostly in winter (wind, fog) and sometimes in spring;
- the decision can come late, sometimes once you are at the launch site;
- if so, you are offered another morning or a refund.
Who can fly?
You stand for the whole flight in a basket divided into compartments. Flying is not recommended for pregnant women or for anyone who struggles to stand for an hour or to climb over the edge of the basket. Operators also set a minimum age for children: give ages when booking and we check with the operator. Fear of heights? Surprisingly, many people who suffer from it cope well, because you do not feel any speed and the basket is deep. But it is personal.
What to wear
- Layers: it is cold at dawn, even in May, and mild by 9 am.
- A cap or beanie: the burners heat the top of your head, the breeze cools the rest.
- Closed shoes: you land in a field.
- A phone strap: you will lean out for photos, and a dropped phone is gone for good.
Getting good photos
The best pictures are not always taken in the air. Inflation, in the half-light, with the burner flames lighting up the envelope, often produces the most striking photos of the morning: get your phone out as soon as you reach the site. Once airborne, the key moment is sunrise itself, when the low light stretches the balloons’ shadows across the fields. Turn off the flash, use burst mode, and remember to look with your own eyes too: many passengers spend the flight behind a screen and regret it afterwards.
Shared or private basket?
The standard option shares the basket with other passengers, up to around twenty depending on the balloon. Private flights, for two or a small group, are available at a much higher price. For a proposal, it is the only option that guarantees a moment of your own.
Fitting it into your day
After getting back around 10 am, tiredness often hits in the early afternoon. The nicest plan: flight in the morning, a slow lunch, a nap, and something light in the evening such as a stroll in the medina. Avoid following it with a long excursion. If you really want to make the most of the day, an evening in the Agafay desert is still possible, but it makes for a long day.
