Casablanca’s Mohammed V airport is Morocco’s main international gateway. Many long-haul flights, and connections via the national airline, arrive there, while the final destination of many travellers is Marrakech. Train, domestic flight or private transfer: what is the best way to get from Casablanca airport to Marrakech after a long journey? Here is a practical comparison, with realistic door-to-door times.
The journey at a glance
- Airport: Mohammed V, code CMN, about 30 km south of Casablanca.
- Distance to Marrakech: about 230 to 240 km by motorway.
- By private car: 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes, without going through Casablanca.
- Road: the A7 motorway via Berrechid and Settat, with service areas.
Option 1: the train
The airport is linked by a shuttle train to Casablanca’s stations, from which trains leave for Marrakech.
- How it works: airport shuttle to Casablanca, change of train, then about 2 hours 40 minutes to Marrakech.
- Real duration: including connections and waiting for the next train, it often takes 4 to 5 hours from the airport to Marrakech, plus a taxi to your hotel or riad.
- Limitations: changing trains with luggage, timetables to respect, and an evening last train you can miss if your flight is delayed.
- For whom: solo travellers or couples with little luggage arriving during the day.
Option 2: a domestic flight
Flights sometimes link Casablanca and Marrakech. The flight itself is short, but you must add the connection, baggage check-in, possible delays and the transfer on arrival. In the end, the time saved compared with the road is often small or non-existent, unless the flight is included in your international ticket.
Option 3: car hire
The motorway is easy, but driving for nearly three hours after a long-haul flight, often at night or with jet lag, is tiring and not very wise. You then have to deal with traffic and parking in Marrakech, where the medina’s alleys are closed to cars.
Option 4: private transfer
Your driver waits for you in the arrivals hall at Mohammed V airport with a name sign, whatever the time. He loads your luggage, settles you in an air-conditioned vehicle and takes the motorway straight to Marrakech, without going through central Casablanca.
- Advantages: no connections, door to door to your hotel or as close as possible to your riad, flight tracking and free waiting if delayed, and the chance to sleep on the way.
- For whom: families, groups, travellers with luggage, late arrivals and anyone who wants to start their stay rested.
The door-to-door comparison
| Option | Airport → hotel in Marrakech | Connections | Night arrival |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train | 4 to 5 h + taxi | 2 (shuttle + train) | Difficult |
| Domestic flight | 3 to 5 h depending on the connection | 1 flight + transfer | Depends on schedules |
| Car hire | 3 h + rental formalities | No | Possible but tiring |
| Private transfer | 2 h 45 to 3 h 15 | None | Yes, at any time |
What if the flight is very late?
This is one of the main advantages of a private transfer: your driver tracks your flight in real time. If the plane is two hours late, he adjusts his arrival time and waits at no extra cost. With the train, a long delay can make you miss the last evening departure and force you to spend the night in Casablanca.
Staying in Casablanca first?
If you would like to discover Casablanca before heading south, our Casablanca airport transfer takes you to your hotel in the city, or to Rabat on request. The Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest in the world, deserves half a day on its own. You can then travel on to Marrakech by train or private transfer from your hotel.
And the other way?
For a return flight from Casablanca, allow at least 3 hours’ drive from Marrakech and the recommended 3 hours of formalities for a long-haul flight. In practice, we advise leaving Marrakech 6 to 7 hours before take-off. Your driver picks you up at the agreed time, even very early in the morning.
Practical tips
- Give your flight number and expected arrival time when booking.
- Get some dirhams at the airport, from the exchange office or an ATM.
- Keep a bottle of water and a jacket within reach: the air conditioning can feel cool at night.
- State the number of bags, especially at the end of a long stay.
