Every week, hundreds of surfers, families and sun-seekers land at Agadir Al Massira airport with one thing in mind: getting to the waves of Taghazout or the calm of Tamraght as quickly as possible. Yet the airport lies inland, south-east of Agadir, while the surf villages are north of the city. Here is how to organise this journey simply, with or without a board, by day or by night.

The journey at a glance

  • Airport: Agadir Al Massira, code AGA, about 25 km south-east of central Agadir.
  • To central Agadir and the bay: 25 to 35 minutes.
  • To Aourir and “Banana Valley”: about 40 minutes.
  • To Tamraght: 40 to 45 minutes.
  • To Taghazout: 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic through Agadir.

Your options to leave the airport

Taxi

Grand taxis wait outside the terminal. The price must be agreed before setting off and can be higher in the evening. The cars are not always suited to surfboards or families with lots of luggage, and drivers rarely know the surf camps tucked away in Taghazout’s alleys.

Public transport

Bus connections from the airport are limited and usually require one or more changes to reach Taghazout. It is an option for a light, patient solo traveller, but rarely after a long flight, and not at night.

Car hire

Handy if you plan to explore the coast by car, but you will have to deal with parking in Taghazout, where the alleys are narrow and spaces scarce in high season.

Private transfer

Your driver waits for you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, loads your luggage and boards, and takes you straight to your surf camp, villa or hotel. He tracks your flight and waits free of charge if it is delayed. Our Agadir airport transfer serves Agadir, Taghazout, Tamraght and the whole coast up to Imsouane on request.

Travelling with surfboards

This is our surfing clients’ number one question. A few simple rules:

  • State the number and length of your boards when booking.
  • Up to two shortboards, an SUV or minivan is enough; beyond that, or with longboards, we plan a Mercedes Vito or a larger vehicle.
  • Board bags travel inside the vehicle, protected from knocks and dust: no roof rack exposed to the wind.
  • There is no surcharge for boards, within the capacity of the vehicle booked.

Arriving in Taghazout: what to know

Taghazout is a former fishing village built on a hillside. The main street can be reached by car, but many places to stay are in pedestrian alleys or up steps. Your driver drops you at the closest point and helps carry your luggage or waits for someone from your accommodation. In Tamraght, Aourir and the Taghazout Bay resorts, drop-off is usually right at the door.

Where to stay: Agadir, Tamraght or Taghazout?

Your choice of base affects both your transfer times and the atmosphere of your stay:

  • Agadir: the city offers a long promenade, a sheltered and calm beach, and plenty of restaurants and services. Ideal for families and those who like having everything close at hand.
  • Tamraght: halfway between, quieter, with many surf schools, guesthouses and quick access to beginner spots.
  • Taghazout: the heart of the surf scene, lively and cosmopolitan, with rooftop cafés and renowned waves.
  • Taghazout Bay: a newer resort with hotels, golf and a developed beach, for a more comfortable, family-friendly stay.

Whatever you choose, your driver drops you as close as possible to your door.

Travelling as a family

With children, a private transfer simplifies everything: baby seats and boosters provided on request, room for the pushchair, a stop on the way if needed. After a flight, avoiding the taxi queue and price negotiation makes a real difference. All our tips for travelling with children are in our guide family travel in Morocco by private transfer.

The return trip to the airport

For an international flight, plan to arrive at the airport 2 to 3 hours before take-off. From Taghazout, leave your accommodation about 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours before your flight time. Your driver picks you up at the agreed time, even very early in the morning.

Going further from Agadir airport

Agadir airport is also a convenient gateway to the rest of southern Morocco. Your driver can take you directly:

  • to Essaouira, along the coastal road, in about 3 hours;
  • to Marrakech, on the motorway, in about 3 hours;
  • to Imsouane, the spot for long waves, in just over an hour.

We compare the options to Marrakech in our guide Marrakech to Agadir or Taghazout.

What to do once there?

Between surf sessions, the region holds some lovely surprises: the natural pools of Paradise Valley, the pink granite of Tafraout, the Agadir Oufella kasbah. Discover our ideas in the guide day trips around Agadir and Taghazout and the Agadir and Taghazout page.
